Today we are talking about smoothies. I barely drink smoothies during the winter (#alwayscold), but during the summer, I’m all about them even though I HATE cleaning the blender. And lately I’ve preferred eating my smoothies to drinking them. Except when Tim left me a surprise smoothie in the fridge at the gym the other day… so nice. 🙂
Anyways! Smoothie bowls popped up as a hot new food trend a couple of years ago, and I like them because you have more freedom in your ingredient choices than you do with smoothies you drink. Since smoothie bowls are consumed with a spoon instead of a straw, you can basically can make your smoothie bowls as thick as you want and play with different textures. You can also get creative with toppings!
My favorite place to grab a smoothie bowl on the go around Boston is Thirst Juice Co (if you come to my Thirst event next week you can check them out!), but smoothie bowls are really easy to make on your own too. Today I’m sharing a recipe that I created this week for a chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie bowl. I hope you love it!
Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie Bowl
- 1 4-ounce tube of Dutch chocolate ProYo frozen yogurt
- 1/4 cup cashew milk (any milk of choice would work)
- 1 banana
- 2 tbsp unsalted creamy peanut butter
- 1/2 tbsp flaxseed
- Toppings of choice
- Take the Dutch chocolate ProYo frozen yogurt tube out of the freezer, and run it under warm water for a few minutes until it softens.
- Squeeze the product out of the tube into the blender.
- Add the cashew milk, banana, peanut butter, and flaxseed. Blend until smooth.
- Pour smoothie mixture into a bowl, and top with your preferred toppings.
The frozen yogurt product that I used in this recipe is from a company called ProYo. ProYo’s frozen yogurt products are known for their high protein content (20 grams per serving) and come in four different flavors: Dutch chocolate, blueberry pomegranate, vanilla bean, and banana vanilla. The folks at ProYo recently sent me all four varieties in the mail to sample, and although they make for a filling snack on their own, I thought it would be fun to create my own smoothie bowl with one of the flavors. I picked chocolate, of course.
I blended the chocolate fro yo right out of the tube with the peanut butter, banana, flaxseed, and cashew milk, and I topped my smoothie bowl with some additional banana slices, sliced strawberries, and unsweetened coconut flakes. You can really choose whatever toppings you like here! Some other ideas include any kind of nut or nut butter, granola, muesli, chia seeds, hemp seeds, flaxseed, rolled oats, cacao nibs, and wheat germ. The options are endless! Just be careful to keep your portions in check, as smoothies/smoothie bowls can be calorically deceptive when you pile on TOO many toppings
This chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie bowl can definitely be eaten for a filling breakfast, but it would also make for a filling snack later in the day as well. Or maybe dessert? It’s kinda like pudding! You guys know I’m a sucker for any chocolate and peanut butter combo (Reese’s gal for life), so it’s no surprise these flavors worked for me.
I think some of the other flavors would be tasty in a smoothie bowl too. Maybe a berry bowl with the blueberry pomegranate flavor or a strawberry banana with the vanilla? I’ve been meaning to try smoothie bowls. I’m not sure why they seem daunting to me, I make and eat soup after all, but they do. My brother used to make this amazing chilled strawberry soup in the summer which, looking back, was basically a smoothie bowl. Before his time!
