One of the Boston area 5k races that I like to get involved with is the OAKtoberfest 5k, held at the Oak Square YMCA where I teach fitness classes in Brighton. Last year I ran the race with my dad, my cousin Dean, and Tim, and I set my 5k personal record of 24:46.
The year before, I was still the group exercise coordinator at the Y, so I helped work the event (called Oak Scare at the time). I didn’t run, but I helped with registration, announcements, fitness demonstrations, and more.
This year, the race is being held on Sunday, October 19th, and I will definitely be running again in hopes of beating my time last year. I’ve actually formed a Fitness & Feta team, and since right now that team only consists of me and my dad, I would like to extend the invitation to all you local readers to join us! How lame if Team F&F only consists of two people, right?!
The Oak Square Y has been kind enough to offer me four free race entries to give away to four lucky winners. For a chance to win, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling me something about running — do you love it? Hate it? Did you used to hate it, but now love it? Are you working on any running goals? For an extra entry into the giveaway, just share this post on social media, and make sure to leave me a second comment telling me you did.
The race is open to walkers, runners, and wheelers. Here’s the agenda for race day:
- 8:30am: Number pick-up and same day registration
- 10:00am: Race begins
- 10:45am: Awards ceremony
- 11:00am – 1:00pm: Post race party with free food and live music (I am also hearing rumors that The Last Drop could potentially be setting up a beer tent? To be confirmed).
For more details about the race location, course map, and more, check out this link. I’ll announce the four giveaway winners on Friday. Even if you don’t win, I have $5 off coupon codes to share with you then.
Good luck!
I love 5K races and my 2014 goal was to run one a month. This race could be a great addition to my race schedule!
I tweeted about the giveaway.
I’m still wicked slow – PR of 40 minutes for a 5K – but I love that running is open for anyone at any fitness level to try.
I used to hate running, but its growing on me. I only ran 3 races before and looking forward to running more especially if running with friends 🙂

Hi! I am so excited to hear about this give-a-way! I would love to race with Team F&F, count me in (regardless if I win the free race or not!). I used to hate running, but I am starting to enjoy it more, and more! I also think it would be awesome if the last drop came by! 🙂
I also tweeted about this giveaway
I love running, and am running a marathon this weekend in an attempt to qualify for Boston!
And I tweeted about the giveaway!
I’ve recently become a fan of running while ‘training’ for my first ever 5K, which is this Saturday to benefit CHB. Tweeting out a link to the blog as we speak!
Running will be the death of me. I do it one or two months out of the year (in the fall) and am always proud of myself when i can finish a race like i did the Oaktoberfest race last year! Hoping to do it again and would love to be on the F&F team!! -missy
I have never been a runner. But watching the Oaktoberfest race last year inspired me to participate this year. I have added walking to my exercise since the spring and I am amazed on the difference it has made! I would love to be part of the F&F team!

I have always hated running, but love how I feel after I run, so that is why I do it! Would enjoy running in another 5K and especially for free! 🙂
This sounds awesome!
if you can find meaning in an activity as absurd as running, maybe you can find meaning in another absurd activity–life.
What a better activity to do in the fall then to run!! I actually started running last yr. my goal was 4 races total last yr alone, this yr I upped it to 5. And this race would be my 5th one for the year. I started out last yr with 19 min miles and now I am in btwn 11-13 mins depending on the course. I do not have time to run alone but I exercise we my son 3-4 times a wk. my races are my alone time. Haha would love to win this and have 5 under my belt for the yr! Ty
Hi Jaclyn, you won this giveaway, but I haven’t heard back from you! Could you please email me to claim your registration code? Thanks!
I love the Oak Square YMCA, and running is growing on me too 🙂
I just shared this post on my twitter @toriashley3 !
I always love an excuse to visit Brighton and the Y! Hopefully I can get the hubby to sign up too 🙂
The “Oak SCARE 5k” was actually the second road race I ever ran in when I started doing them back in 2009. It is still also one of my best times ever, which I credit to the course running right by my house on Lake Street. Have always meant to run it again but this time really mean it. My training has been strong recently and I am also hoping for a 5K PR.
