Doesn’t that sound like a wonderful time to head to the gym?!
No, really. Doesn’t it?
Cue: Personal plug.
I know it seems like I’m teaching all the time since I’m constantly subbing, but my regular classes each week are Tuesday nights at 7:30pm and Thursday mornings at 6:00am. Both are circuit training classes. I’ll let you guess which draws a larger crowd…
6am is a tough time to get out of bed and workout! But for those that do – and we’re a special breed – we depend on classes being available at this time! That being said, I’m trying to get some higher numbers in my Thursday 6am class.
In lieu of this, the Oak Square YMCA has agreed to let non-members try out my 6am class for free over the next couple of weeks. If you try it out and decide you want to join the Y, they will waive your joining fee. That’s a sweet deal! If you are interested in trying out my class for free, let me know.
Also, I think I’m going to try rebranding and giving the class a different name. Which of the following names do you think would: a) appear to both men and women, b) make you want to get out of bed in the morning to workout, c) describes a class that provides a cardiovascular and strength training workout of different types each week?
- Cardio Ball
- Step & Sculpt
- Total Body Sculpt
- Kick & Pump
- Jump & Flex
- Y Pump
- Express Workout (this one would be two 30 minute “express” workout classes and then members could choose either 1 or both)
Comment please!!
I like express work out! This way, even the snoozers in the group will have no excuse not to attend at least the 2nd portion (I’ve often fallen into the cognitive trap of, “well I’m going to be 5 minutes late- I guess I can’t go!”), plus giving people more early morning flexibility overall. You could even set up a circuit or station to keep those who want to do the full hour moving while you get the second group warmed up, so people will be encouraged to stay for the whole hour.
Hi Athena!
I miss your Thursday morning classes a lot (and your awesome attitude)! Is there any way I can attend a few classes even though I used to be a member? Not sure if this just for prospective members.
As for names, I like “Kick and Pump” or “Total Body Sculpt”.
Thanks so much!
Elizabeth
I agree with Mel. It’s a psychological battle with your self that early in the morn to hit a given start time. Two classes gives flexibility and ‘express’ gives the perception that you have time to get it in before work, even if you snoozed a few times.
I agree – express workout is probably best…I imagine it would be hard for you to figure out how to split it into two separate classes, but hopefully we can easily convince people to stay the whole time. I also feel like we should recruit from among people who are already there at 6 AM doing the cardio and weight machines upstairs. Either going up and talking to people directly before or hanging up fliers that say something like “already bored thinking about getting on the elliptical this morning? come try out this class!” Can you tell I really want to make this work? haha
I like the Jump & Flex! But the 30 min express gives people a chance to make it to a 6:30 class, annd the option of doing the 6am and the 6:30 class.
Please wake me up for class tomorrow! I would like to try it out before PT! — Cait @
awww I’m so sad that I don’t live close to the Y anymore because I miss your thursday morning classes SO much!! There’s nothing better than gettign to work and knowing you’ve already had a kick butt workout:)
I like Total Body Sculpt, too because your classes really are “total body”
and I think the 2 express workout idea is awesome because sometimes I couldn’t go when I had to be at work early, but if class ended at 6:30 I totally could have!
sorry i didnt make it! Next week
